The Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEREC, machine is an advanced dental tool used to create customized ceramic dental restorations in just one visit. CEREC is a Computer Aided Design/Computer Aided Manufacturing, or a CAD/CAM, device that is composed of a computer, camera and milling machine, all in one. Even though it may resemble a factory machine rather than a tool used for dentistry, its technology will allow you to receive dental services that are much more effective and less time-consuming. This means that you will endure less tooth drilling, fewer injections and will be able to have more time in your schedule. In a single visit, your dentist will be able to fit you with a customized, ceramic product that will match the natural color of your teeth. The CEREC machine can be used for:
- Partial crown
- Posterior crown
- Anterior crown
How Does CEREC Work?
Your dentist will begin by removing the damaged parts of the tooth and then prepare and shape it to receive the restoration. Once the tooth has been fully prepared, the camera will be used to obtain multiple accurate mapping images of the tooth. The images will be transferred to a color computer screen where your dentist will use CAD software to design a product that addresses your specific dental issues. When the dentist has completed the design, a ceramic block is placed into the milling machine portion of CEREC where it will be milled and cased onto the design with specialized cutters controlled by the computer. Once the implant is completed, your dentist will cement or bond the milled product directly to the surface of your tooth.
Why Should You Choose a CEREC Restoration?
- Saves Time. The device can drastically reduce the time it takes to get your dental products. Your dentist is no longer required to fabricate temporary restorations or make impressions of your teeth and send them to the laboratory. You can expect the entire process to take around two hours, while you wait in the office.
- Better Material. The ceramic material that is used in CEREC is closer to the natural tooth and its enamel than any other dental product that has been created. It has a roughness and hardness that is similar to the natural tooth, so there is no concern about the CEREC product damaging nearby natural teeth or being damaged or worn away by them. It is also tooth-colored, so you will not have silver-colored fillings diminishing the appeal of your smile.
